This was fascinating to read, Beth. Like Glenn, I was also drawn what you said about writing "because I have thoughts and observations that I want to share. I want to share because I want to connect with others."
And congratulations on your prizes and the forthcoming publication of your dad poems!
The poetry journey; perhaps like running you have to look back Beth to see how far you've come. You have come along way!
I was really drawn to your observation on writing: "I write because I have thoughts and observations that I want to share. I want to share because I want to connect with others".
It’s interesting what people think motivates one to write. Several people on the edges of my social circle and one very old friend thought it was a sort of therapy and wondered why it was so important to me to be published. I explained the importance of connection and communication and asked if they wondered why an actor wanted to act for an audience. They do that because the audience is a necessary element in their communication of character and feeling. They hadn’t considered it in that way before.
Motivation is complex. When I started writing it was therapeutic; it was the middle of the pandemic and it helped to get stuff out of my head. There was no connection at all until I came across TopTweetTuesday. Connections begat connections, and so became a reason to continue, to extend the connections. Like you Beth, the audience then became part of the process and experience, and the strokes we give each other a vital part of being wanted and accepted. Perhaps. I need to be doing something useful and giving.
And so the audience becomes fused with the purpose. To connect and maybe better understood as to who you are. Awareness and understanding of motives is not in everyone's toolbox.

Thank you very much Merril. Connection is everything.
You're welcome, Beth!

That's it.

Yes! Top Tweet Tuesday was a wonderful thing.
I'm really enjoying these posts - the preambles as well as the poetry. This is a great poem too! x
